The heart cry of many job seekers today is either there are no (‘good’) jobs around and or that the requirements given by seeming employers are just too much considering the economic and educational inconsistency seen today. This has left many unemployed or worse still under-employed, accepting a job just to keep up with survival.
Are “good jobs really not around again? Is it that the requirements given by employers are not truly feasible? “NO,” says Olusegun Omotosho, an employment consultant and Managing Director of Heartland Consulting. He asserts that, the problem is not lack of employment or the seeming unrealistic requirements by possible employers but that the job seekers are unemployable. Unemployable in the sense that they lack basic skills required to practically tackle problems posed in the work environment. Also, he has come to observe over time that many just while away there free time (due vacation, academic institutions strike actions and public holidays). They could have at best used such time to boost their skill set, professional qualification base and on – job experience either by being directly employed or volunteering. Come to think of it, how could an aspiring employee think his or her university degree ‘paper’ certificate is all there is to getting and keeping a job, a good job for that matter. Another notable problem is that, job applicants tend to look more in the direction of big corporations ignoring the seeming small and growing enterprises. Small firms provides long standing career development opportunities, which is a good buy for many who seek to develop themselves well in their chosen career and possibly launch out to start something of their own someday.
